Doctor's Meadow Southborough Site
Sunday 21st September 2025 11 to 2 Unfortunately we will only have a display table of finds and information and of course we can talk to you and answer your questions. The actual site has been closed by Southborough Society due to unstable trees and associated safety issues.
We have been privileged in the last year to gain access to this site, which is normally closed to the public. We have conducted an archeological investigation into local history, potentially spanning from the English Civil War to World War II. Doctor's Meadow is located in Southborough between Southborough Common and Camp Field and enjoyed a long history based on artifacts located on the sites. During World War II Canadian and English infantry regiments were billeted nearby.
The site is steeply sloped from a high ridge to the North-West down to a stream forming the South-East border of Doctor's Meadow. After much undergrowth clearance, we have explored several features, including pits, pathways and a potential World War II lookout post. |

We will be able to show the public a wide range of artifacts, including musket balls, horse shoes / stirrup, used bullets and a World War II
RAF Sweetheart Brooch |
 |
| If you are driving we suggest parking in St Peter's Church Car Park (Post Code TN4 0RU)
and walking west through the woods to our display. We will have signs to show where we are located.

The society's main goal is to provide opportunities for members to participate in various aspects of archaeological fieldwork, such as archaeological excavations, recording and metal detecting and to promote archaeology throughout the community, with open days, talks and exhibitions.

| 2025 Excavation: Doctor's Meadow near Southborough Common |
 |
|
The 2025 season started in late April with exploration and vegetation clearance at our new site. Many thanks to Southborough Society for giving us permission to explore this meadow. We started by clearing and excavating a pit, which potentially held World War II remains and we will also explore other features across the site.
Already the site has produced several very interesting finds, including numerous spent bullets, lino, a gold and enamel WWII pilot sweetheart badge, a 1980's crunchie wrapper! and a 1980's dog collar tag.
Unfortunately in late July 2025, the access to the site was closed by Southborough Society to safety concerning some large trees.
